Interesting facts about the Khmer language
Khmer is the main and official language of Cambodia. After Vietnamese, it is the mostly widely spoken language of the Austro-Asiatic family and evolved from the mediaeval Mon-Khmer. Unlike many other Asian languages, Khmer is not a tonal language, i.e. words are not differentiated in meaning according to the respective emphasis or pitch. This makes Khmer easier to learn than Thai or Vietnamese, especially for Western visitors. Khmer has its own writing system and can be divided into various dialects.
The father of modern Khmer is considered to be the monk Chuon Nath, who rejected the increasing influence of the French colonial powers at the beginning of the 20th century. After French had become the language of the educated upper class, local scholars such as Chuon Nath adopted countermeasures and translated the entire Buddhist canon from Pali into Khmer. New Khmer words were developed for modern French terms. The dictionary of modern Khmer developed by scholars is still in use. Chuon Nath has been commemorated in the form of a wax sculpture in the Cambodian Cultural Village of Siem Reap.
