Interesting facts about the Estonian language
Estonian belongs to the Finn-Ugric family of languages and is spoken by over one million people altogether in Estonia, Russia, Sweden, and the other Baltic states. It has two very different main dialects – Northern Estonian (Tallinn) is used in the majority of the country and forms the basis of the modern literary language and Southern Estonian is spoken south of Tartu.
Estonian is written using Latin characters and the oldest written evidence of it dates back to the 16th century. Estonian is very closely related to Finnish and also has connections with Lappish (the language of the Sámi) and Hungarian. These languages make up a subgroup of the Uralic family.
One characteristic of Estonian is the stress on the first syllable. It has a complex system of phonemes concerning the length of vowels and consonants. In contrast to Hungarian and Finnish, there is no vowel harmony. There is no grammatical gender and there are 14 cases.
